Hair Graying Remedies: The Best Natural Ingredients for Coloring Your Gray Hair At Home

Graying of hair with age is a natural process, and probably happens to almost everyone. Nevertheless, we all try to find ways to deal with it and find some remedy to hide those grey streaks. However, to make matters worse, most of us go for chemical-based crude hair dyes or other non-natural colors from the market only to help the gray hairs increase in numbers with time. But, this is certainly not what you want!

So, if you think you are conscious enough and are reluctant to use such chemical-based hair products to color your hair, your only choice is the mild, hair-friendly, natural ingredients. In this article, we have a list of a few of the best ingredients for you to color your hair naturally, as well as the techniques to apply them right in the comfort of your home. So, let’s take a look at these natural/herbal ingredients to color your gray hair:

Gooseberry Hair Pack

Gooseberry is also a very common fruit used traditionally to add darker shades to your hair. Also called ‘amla’, gooseberry even has the natural property to keep your hair healthy and glossy even when you consume it raw. To apply it to your hair, you can collect a packet of powdered amla and mix it with coconut oil (the amount depends on the length and/or density of your hair). Massage the mixture all over your scalp (hair roots) and hair, and then, leaving it for about an hour (or overnight for better result). Use a mild shampoo to wash it off the following morning. Repeat the process at least once a week to keep your hair from turning back to gray.

Henna Hair Pack

Also known as the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet, henna is a color dye produced industrially for coloring hair (apart from other purposes).  Application of this dye not only renders a striking dark color to your hair, but also nourishes it from within. It is a very traditional hair dye for covering the gray hair strands, and can effectively work to serve the purpose. To apply, add powdered henna to water and keep it overnight, preferably in an iron bowl (to render a darker hue). Apply this mixture to your hair and scalp and leave it on for a few hours before washing it off. Henna is totally natural and safe, which means that you can use it as often as desired.

Black Tea Liqueur

Leaves of the tea plant contain some natural pigments, which can help in darkening your grayed hair. To utilize this goodness, you need to brew any strong tea, the way you prepare regular tea for drinking, or else, teabags in strongly-heated water. When the water is dark enough, set it aside to cool. When done, rinse your hair with the liqueur and let it sit for about an hour. Wash off with normal water. Additionally, you might also want to add some henna to this mixture, since it will enhance the effect.

Brewed Dark Coffee

This also works in the same manner as tea. To use it, you need to brew strong dark coffee in hot water, and then, wait until it cools. Wash your hair with this and allow it to rest for one hour. Use plain water to rinse off your hair. Additionally, you can also add a spoonful of henna powder to this mixture too and expect an enhanced result.

Curry Leaves in Coconut Oil

Curry leaves are available easily and have the power to restore your hair’s dark color. All you need is a few curry leaves and some coconut oil. Heat the mixture on fire until you see it darkens. When done, keep it aside until it cools, and finally, massage it all over your hair, especially the lighter areas. Keep it as it is for at least an hour, and then wash off your hair.

Potato Peel Boiled in Water

The starch present in potato helps in adding a dark pigmentation to your hair. Potato is a vegetable that is probably available in almost everyone’s kitchen, and hence, won’t be difficult for you to pick up 5 to 7 of them for your hair. Peel off the skin of potatoes and boil them in plain water until the frothy starch collects at the top. Drain out this water and rinse your hair with it. Keep it overnight before washing off your hair in the morning with some mild organic shampoo.
